The Place of Useful Learning
The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow is one of the UK's leading universities, meeting the needs of students, employers, industry and the wider community through its teaching, research and consultancy.
Strathclyde is known as "the place of useful learning" - an ethos which dates from its founder Professor John Anderson, who established Anderson's Institution in 1796 as a place of education for all, regardless of gender, status or income. The University received its royal charter in 1964.
Although an intrinsic part of Glasgow and the west coast, Scotland's third largest university welcomes students from 100 countries to study and work at Strathclyde.
The University has four faculties across two campuses. The city-centre John Anderson Campus houses the Faculties of Humanities & Social Sciences (HaSS); Engineering; Science; and the Strathclyde Business School. The part of the HaSS Faculty specialising in teacher education shall remain based at the Jordanhill Campus in the west of Glasgow until 2012.
Students
There are over 14,700 full- and part-time students. Around 11,200 of these are undergraduates and 3,500 postgraduate. Another 34,000 people take part in continuing education and professional development programmes, making the University one of the largest providers of CPD and continuing education in the UK.
The University of Strathclyde was rated the best university in the UK when it comes to impressing students. The Times Higher Education Supplement asked 10,000 first-year undergraduates to reflect on their experiences during the application process and how they perceived their university in 10 categories. Strathclyde had more top 20 mentions than any other institution and was in the top 10 in four.
Strathclyde's students perceived the University to be a particularly strong performer in terms of employment prospects, course content and the quality of the teaching and they prized the "reasonable" cost of living in the area and its welcoming and accessible location.
Staff
The University is one of Glasgow's top 10 employers, with over 3,200 people (around 2,845 full-time jobs) across a range of occupations, with an emphasis on highly-skilled professional and technical positions.
With a balance of 42% academic staff to 58% support staff, the staffing profile reflects the University's multi-faceted nature.
