The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is one of the leading applied mathematics and statistics departments in Scotland and highly regarded internationally. For example, the results of the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) showed that our work in Applied Mathematics was ranked 1st in Scotland and 11th in the United Kingdom when ranked by "research power". Our fundamental and applied research is relevant to a huge range of real world problems ranging from the dynamics of fish populations in the North Sea to the mechanics of liquid crystals and the growth of cancer cells, and several of our staff are working directly on immediate practical problems such as the spread of infectious diseases via joint appointments in a variety of government agencies.
The Department offers MPhil (one year), MSc (one year), MRes (one year) and PhD (three to four years) research degrees. Funding is available from various sources, including the EPSRC, University Scholarships, Carnegie Trust, Scottish Overseas Research Student Awards Scheme, UK industry and the EU.
Postgraduate students benefit from being part of the Scottish Mathematical Sciences Training Centre (external link) which includes a six month intensive course in a variety of mathematical subjects. Students also attend research seminars within the Department, and have opportunities to attend national and international conferences. Other generic skills courses are open to students, including writing, presentation and careers workshops.
