Our postgraduates have shared offices in the department (usually two to a reasonably-sized office). A postgraduate student's primary contact is with his/her supervisor, but we also have a system of allocating a "senior friend" an experienced member of staff who keeps an eye on the student, and helps him/her to assess progress at regular intervals.
Postgraduate students benefit from being part of the Scottish Mathematical Sciences Training Centre (external link) which includes a six month intensive course in a variety of mathematical subjects. Students also attend research seminars within the Department, and have opportunities to attend national and international conferences. Other generic skills courses are open to students, including writing, presentation and careers workshops.
The postgraduate students also organise their own Postgraduate Lectures in which they give talks to each other on their research projects.
There is also a series of Advanced Lectures with some research-level courses each year, and students may broaden their knowledge by attending a few final-year undergraduate classes during their studies.
