MMath Degree in Mathematics

Mathematics

The MMath in Mathematics is an "enhanced" undergraduate degree corresponding to the 4-year MMath degrees offered in England and Wales and therefore takes one year more than the BSc Honours degree in Mathematics. This also makes the degree comparable to first degree courses common in Europe.

Applicants with three good Advanced Highers or A-levels will normally enter the 5-year degree course at the year 2 stage and so may complete the MMath in four years. In the first three years such students follow a similar curriculum to years 2-4 of the BSc Honours in Mathematics degree. Note that progress requirements for the MMath are higher than for the BSc Honours degree.

The fifth year of the course contains a major project (half the curriculum) which could involve an industrial placement, as well as further mathematics classes.

The MMath in Mathematics degree provides a thorough training in mathematical skills required for embarking upon a PhD degree programme, or for employment in areas that demand a strong mathematical background, such as industrial research and development, telecommunications or consultancy.
