Dr Tony Mulholland has published over 50 papers from nonlinear wave propagation in mathematical biology to the modelling of ultrasonic devices and systems.
Members of his research group are:
PhD Students
Joe Pettigrew (from 2012)
Postdoctoral Researchers
A common theme is the provision of fundamental mathematical expertise to the solution of real engineering and bio-medical problems. He has collaborations throughout the US and Europe, and is a member of a French GDR network in Ultrasonics. He plays the leading role in the modelling developments in the Centre for Ultrasonic Engineering (CUE) at Strathclyde University (www.cue.ac.uk) and has recently secured a £1 million EPSRC Platform Grant; the central aim of which is to establish a world leading centre of excellence in coded ultrasound. CUE is a leading partner in the UK National Centre for Research in Non-Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE), the other founder members being the universities of Imperial, Bath, Bristol, Nottingham and Warwick (www.rcnde.ac.uk). He has developed a computationally efficient, plane wave expansion model that will allow 3-dimensional analysis of the vibrational and electrical behaviour of piezoelectric composite devices with lossy polymer phases. The model also facilitated the first study of wave propagation in composite piezoelectric media with a radically new design involving fractal geometry. He is an instructor for the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry and is an international referee for the Canadian NSERC and the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology in New Zealand. He is actively involved in the administration of national learned societies; until recently a committee member of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society and currently a vice-chair of the Scottish branch of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. In the last five years he has helped to secure over £2 million of external funding and this allowed him to create a small research group in the department of mathematics. He has recently secured £0.5 million funding from EPSRC to Bridge the Gaps between mathematics, engineering and other disciplines (www.strath.ac.uk/btg). One of his key ideas was then realised when he organised the first University Research Day at Strathclyde; an annual event to showcase the research activity across all four faculties of the university. He is committed to the public dissemination of Strathclyde's research and this has led him to develop a web-based research portal. The beta version of this portal is now fully functional and resides in an interactive zone in the Glasgow Science Centre, with the full site going live later in the year. As part of an EPSRC Public Engagement grant, he is helping to develop ultrasound lab projects in schools to impart the fun of scientific research to the next generation. His industrial research collaborators include Doosan Babcock, PZFlex Europe, Rolls Royce, Shell, the National Nuclear Laboratory, Serco Assurance, and BP.
